Most Christians however misinterpret what Atonement means. In most Christian and church circles, the thought is that Messiah Jesus "atoned" for our sins. This would be incorrect though. The word atonement is not used in the New Testament in relationship to Jesus.

To understand this, we must understand the true definition of "atonement." It means to cover over. When the Israelites sinned and they sacrificed to deal with their sin appropriately, according to the Law and the command of God, their sin was "atoned" for (covered). It was technically still there, but not counted against them because of the blood that was shed (bulls, goats, lambs, etc.).

But when Jesus (the Lamb of God) shed His blood, it actually washed away sin, not just covered it. This is why no one could be in God's presence until Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven and sprinkled HIS blood upon the real Mercy Seat on the Ark in the Temple in Heaven!

Our sin wasn't "atoned" for, it was washed, cleansed, completely forgiven; thrown as far as the East is from the West and tossed into the Sea of Forgetfulness!
