For example, you list “at the beach, on a boat”; I’m at the beach on a boat now, but taking a break from all the “fun”. People see movies of people having “adventures”, and think they wish their lives could be as interesting and adventurous as what Hollywood pumps out daily. The fact is that when it happens, it’s not so much fun at all. However, what I’ve noticed is that when there’s someone else there, they really find it all so exciting for some reason.
I asked a complete stranger to help me move a sailboat across the gulf of Mexico. He brought some girl he’d just met the night before. She’d just moved from Kentucky only to have her boyfriend break up with her two days later. She was an emotional mess. Two days later we were out on the gulf in a tropical depression; lost the mizzen, lost the engine, etc. She’d never been out of Kentucky, and was now having the time of her life while I was wondering how long before the batteries went dead and we no longer had any way to run the chartplotter, cell phones, pump water, etc.
The guy who brought her stepped in a hot pile of dog crap, and began crying.
